How To: Set Text Message Alerts with iCal

If you prefer managing your calendar on the desktop with iCal but you really wish you could take advantage of SMS reminders like Google Calendar offers, reader Colby Pash suggests a simple, smart tip for creating SMS reminders with iCal:
As you know, text message inboxes have email addresses—for instance, 7125550000@vtext.com (for Verizon users). If you add your phone’s email address as an emailing option in your Address Book vCard, you can choose it as an option to email a reminder. Set the date, time and reminder and, Bam—you have a cell phone reminder.
While this idea isn’t a breakthrough (we’ve covered sending SMS messages from email before), it is a smart and clever application of email-to-text capabilities. Just make sure your computer’s on when you need it. Thanks Colby!

Unconfirmed: Europeans May Get Bigger Badder iPhone
An alleged (as in probably photoshopped) leaked advert, suspected to be from T-Mobile Germany, indicates a 16GB iPhone with 3G support (HSDPA and UMTS), shall be making its way to German shores for 12th November 2007.
The advertisement goes onto to stipulate possible download speeds of 3.6Mbps and a $687 price tag. The purchase of the phone would also come with an iTunes voucher, various call plans will be on offer, but unlimited data plans will apparently make their way into Germany. The call plans will range from $69-$96/month, with more inclusive minutes and text messages being the reason for the price gap. European carriers have not as yet been officially announced, but unofficially the Financial Times listed T-Mobile as the selected carrier for the device within Germany. Obviously, this must be taken with a huge mountain of salt, but the information for the best part does corroborate with well with what is to be expected, with a few surprises chucked in for good measure. If this is V2, expect the US model to follow within a similar time frame. We are calling this nothing more than a rumour. Though it almost certainly is fanboy PS work, the spec makes us happy, so we’ve got our fingers crossed.[Electronista].

Lighting: Crazy Sexy Cool Lamps, 100% Made From Bulbs
Bulbs Unlimited offers kits to make your own incredible lamps and fixtures, composed from little more than your old light bulbs. It’s sort of like building a home from your own useless toenail clippings, but a lot more stylish and a bit less freaky. galleryPost(‘BulbLamps’, 8, ‘BulbLamps’);
Kits include necessary hardware and a special bulb-marking template. You use the template to mark the connection points on the bulb, add glue and affix snaps to those points. The whole process looks like a fairly easy way (for anyone without our rough caveman hands) to have a great conversation piece. Kits range from about $18 to over $100. And we’re on board with the “bright” idea. OMG, get it?? [bulbsunlimited via technabob]

At Apple Inc , recent press event no information regarding the European launch of the iPhone was forthcoming, other than Pascal Cagni, Apple Vice President of Europe, Middle East and Africa saying “it’s coming”.So.. I gotta ask is… “when!?” oh, and “for how much?”.. as my Sony K750i is wearing me down.

Just a quick FYI: Costco is working hard to get rid of their iPod inventory to make room for the new iPods released earlier this week. Some pretty nice price cuts are rumored to be in effect. As I hear it they are as follows:
So if you have a local Costco nearby, it might be worth a visit to see if they have any left.

Okay, it’s a weekend and I’ve had a long week so this post is one to add to the “Pointless Post” category. Startrail is a application by Pawn Software, but I wouldn’t call it an “Essential App” by any means. It’s just one of those things that you get to waste time and that’s about it. Startrail is a simple little app that puts a trail of stars (go figure) behind your mouse. It’s kind of like a firework or something. Anyway, if you have some time to kill and want something that will be a friend during those “no brain activity” moments. Here you go.
