Google Adds a new search tool

Google Adds Search To Google Reader

Google Reader

It may seem odd that Google Reader did not have a search feature, but that had been the case since it launched almost two years ago, that is until now.

They also added some other new features, including an unread subscription count that goes up to 1000. Google Reader is quickly becoming the perfect feed reader for me. Here’s my previous write-up on Reader.

Apple Event..No Surprises Really…Apple Rocks

Another Apple Event has come and gone. No big surprises really.  Apple has released some solid but overdue products.

  • The new shuffle colors?  :/ No comment
  • The new iPod Classic?  Reality distortion at its most profound?  I guess the “We couldn’t sell enough of these things before the new ones were ready iPod” didn’t really have the Zing!  160GB is nice I guess but that screen is so..tiny…
  • Cheaper  iPhones?  Really?  We bet the early adopters are happy Apple snagged that $200 tax for 2 months of early adoption.  $100/month.  Suckers!
  • Mobile Store?  More ways for Apple to get your money for DRM.  That is a helluva “one more thing”
  • Ring Tones!?!? Paying an extra buck to get a portion of a song YOU ALREADY OWN on your iPhone? HAHAHAHA.  You are in a reality obliteration field if you are psyched about this.  Seriously, we know this is the record companies’ doing but how does Steve give this to us with a straight face?!  Is this a benefit?  Can we make ringtones out of songs we make in Garage Band?  Way to go corporate whores Apple!

As soon as you wipe all of that Apple event off of your face Apple fanboys, remember:

  • no iChat yet
  • Starbucks in bed with Apple.  These big deal things always turn out messy – with Apple’s partners hatin’.
  • no VOIP on the touch now or in the future – no sound in.
  • no open dev. platform for these things.  got to hack hack hack
  • 16Gb fills up really fast.  Better hope there is plenty of Wifi around
  • what is all of the extra space on that iPodtouch – where are the other apps?

A solid event to be sure.  Kudos Apple for releasing some great products.  Now get back to work!

Oh, btw.  New MacBook Pros coming in January…more… coming…

Pissed and angry??

Can someone be pissed and excited at the same time?

ipods.jpg

I submit that you can and that the latter is way more important than the former. Or at least that’s what the folks over at Apple must be thinking. Imagine this: Somewhere in the last 66 days, in the midst of an Apple board meeting, suddenly bursts an unshaven, sleep-deprived tech dude, screeching to a halt from his recent sprint. Breathing heavy, he shouts aloud, “I made a touch-faced iPod with WiFi and I redesigned the classic iPods again. This time I crammed a HUGE hard drive in there!” The room is filled with massive jubilation and glee. Then in the mix of all the unbridled excitement some “semi-jealous for not thinking of the idea” executive, intoxicated by the sudden burst of amusement, must have said, “Hey! I have an idea! Let’s knock 200 bucks off the price of the iPhone, that will be super fun!” Then, yet another emotionally charged executive jumps on the phone and says, “Run Steve! Run! Off to the September keynote with you… Run like the wind!” And off he skips in glee… (more…)

Whats up with twitter?

Something Going On At Twitter?

At first I thought it was just another Twitter outage, and then (after a couple of hours of Twitterrific not working) I tried connecting to Twitter directly:

twitter.jpg

There isn’t a page on Twitter (including their blog) that can be accessed as I write this (3:30am PST Thursday). It may just be sugar coating on yet another period of downtime; an alternative to the Twitter downtime bird that replaced the Twitter cat some time ago, but if it is, it’s the first time I’ve seen it. On the other hand, something might be going on at Twitter: more stable servers perhaps? or even a new feature launch? Watch this space.

Update: Twitter back up as at 5am PST. A notice on Twitter states that Twitter would be down for 2.5 hours from midnight, looks like they were 50% of the way there is terms of downtime.  At the time of writing there is nothing on the Twitter blog explaining the reason for the downtime. Looks like a regular outage with sugar coating.

Ipod thoughts..

Thoughts on the new iPods

So if you want to know really what Apple did today, it is confirm the fact that they are moving away from “computer as your digital hub” into “we are making an undirected graph structure that encompasses your digital life.” Quite wordy! But its pretty much true.

You can see this in the fact that Apple now, as I predicted a while ago, is entering the Holiday season with half their product line having 802.11 wireless and OSX running on them:

  • Mac Mini
  • Mac Pro
  • Mac Book Pro
  • Mac Book
  • iPod Touch
  • iPhone
  • AppleTV

Lets consider that for a moment. That means Apple has a device potentially on your desk, lap, TV and in your pocket all running a derivative of the same operating system, and all capable of wireless connectivity with the world and with each other. Apple today released the wireless iTunes music store. I wager that by the holidays we’ll have a high definition iTunes Movie Store made for the AppleTV. I also wager the little form-factor bluetooth keyboard is for this purpose as well.

Apple is basically saying that no matter what modality you want to experience content, commerce and community in you have it. I don’t think showing Facebook on iPhone was coincidence, I think Apple is positioning the iPod Touch and iPhone as a community device.

Here is my bet:

Apple will enable wireless purchase from AppleTV of HD quality movies. I think I heard they are only accepting HD movies right now anyhow. And then… wireless sync. Then “friend” features (suspiciously missing, but easily doable). And then Leopard integration comes.

Apple has a trojan horse on their hands. And the scary and awesome thing I think, is that they have 2 in my pocket and one on my TV.
